A thrilling victory for Antonio Fuoco in the FIA GT World Cup Qualification Race has earned him the prestigious Pirelli Pole Position Award, ensuring an Italian presence at the front of the grid for Sunday's Main Race. This achievement is a testament to Fuoco's skill and strategy, as he converted his pole position into a dominant win.
Driving a powerful Ferrari 296 GT3, Fuoco led the 12-lap race from start to finish, showcasing his prowess behind the wheel. His teammate, Yifei Ye from China, joined him on the podium, securing a 1-2 finish for the AF Corse team.
But here's where it gets interesting! Raffaele Marciello, known for his fast starts, attempted a daring move to snatch second place at the Lisboa Corner. However, he had to abort the maneuver, settling for fourth place instead.
Despite his rapid getaway, Marciello couldn't make further progress, and the BMW M4 GT3 (Evo) driver had to be content with fourth at the finish line. Alessio Picariello, in his Tempo by Absolute Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R (992), completed the podium.
Marciello's start also saw him demote Joel Eriksson at the beginning, with the Swedish Audi driver taking fifth place. Ayhancan Güven, Luca Engstler, Laurin Heinrich, Dorian Boccolacci, and Yi Deng rounded out the top 10.
And this is the part most people miss: Edoardo Mortara, who was initially set to start third, was demoted to 10th after his Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo 2 was found to have exceeded performance limits during Super Pole. He finished a disappointing 16th.
The FIA GT World Cup Main Race, consisting of 16 laps, is scheduled to begin at 12:15 local time on Sunday. You can catch all the action live on the FIA's official YouTube channel.
