Just a day prior, the Cabinet of Ministers greenlit another initiative by the Ministry of Defence, allocating 49,039 euros to support five projects spearheaded by non-governmental organizations (NGOs). These projects are designed to promote research, encourage active participation from Latvian civil society in national defense efforts, and enhance collaboration with NGOs. This demonstrates a commitment to a holistic approach to national security, recognizing that a strong defense relies not only on military might but also on an informed and resilient society.
Minister of Defense Andris Sprūds emphasized that cooperation with NGOs is crucial for strengthening public involvement and understanding of security issues, thereby contributing to the nation's security and democratic principles. The Ministry of Defence received a total of 21 project applications from NGOs, ultimately selecting five for support. The supported organizations include the "Latvian Transatlantic Organisation", "Latvian Sustainable Procurement Association", "Latvian Federation of Security and Defence Industries", "Education Development Centre", and "Baltic Initiative for European Union Reform".
The projects encompass a diverse range of activities, from information campaigns and training seminars focused on building resilience and capability, to research on business continuity within the defense industry and the development of digital tools for analyzing hybrid threat scenarios. Each project will receive funding not exceeding 10,000 euros, sourced from the Ministry of Defence's 2025 budget program, specifically the "Implementation of the National Defence Policy." This is a substantial investment in the future of Latvian security.
