Imagine being denied a simple flight home because of a medical condition that's not even contagious. That's the shocking reality faced by journalist and former BBC presenter Mark Mardell, who was left feeling humiliated and stranded by Turkish Airlines.

Mardell, who has Parkinson's disease, was unaware of the airline's strict policy requiring a doctor's report for passengers with this condition. Despite having previously flown with Turkish Airlines, he was turned away at the gate in Istanbul, unable to board his flight back to Gatwick.

"This isn't just about paperwork; it's a blatant display of prejudice disguised as policy," Mardell wrote on Facebook, expressing his outrage. "It's an ignorant and insulting approach that belongs in the Middle Ages, not modern-day aviation."

The BBC has reached out to Turkish Airlines for comment, but Mardell wants to make it clear that this issue is not isolated to one airline.

"I want to emphasize that Turkish Airlines is the only airline I've encountered with such a policy. It's not about assistance; it's a barrier to travel for people with Parkinson's," he said.

Mardell's trip to Istanbul with his son Jake was smooth until the moment he was denied boarding. He had checked in his luggage and even passed through security, only to be told he wasn't considered fit to fly without a doctor's letter.

"I wasn't drunk, violent, or late. My only 'sin' was having Parkinson's," Mardell said. "They demanded a letter stating I was safe to fly, as if we were a danger to ourselves or others. It's an absurd and discriminatory requirement."

Parkinson's disease is the fastest-growing neurological condition globally, and Mardell's Facebook post highlights the need for awareness and understanding. He provides examples of major airlines like British Airways, Lufthansa, American, Emirates, and Qantas, which do not require such reports for passengers with Parkinson's.

"Turkish Airlines stands alone in this demand, and it's time for a change. People with Parkinson's should not be treated as a threat or an inconvenience," he wrote.

Mardell's experience with Turkish Airlines staff was largely negative, leaving him stranded and alone at the airport for hours. It was only with the help of a kind member of the public and a helpful staff member that he was able to locate his suitcase.

He has since returned home to the UK, flying with Wizz Air the following day. Mardell shared his ordeal on Facebook to bring attention to Turkish Airlines' policy, hoping to prevent others with Parkinson's from facing the same discrimination.

"I had to rebook, spend a night in a hotel, and endure the stress of being stranded, all because of a medical condition that poses no threat to others. It's time for Turkish Airlines to reevaluate their policy and treat people with Parkinson's with the respect and dignity they deserve," he concluded.
